ADTA builds practical self-defense skills

We help you learn practical self-defense skills in a safe and supportive social environment.

We offer defensive handgun training that helps you protect yourself and your family from life-threatening situations.

What makes us unique?

Not only do we offer defensive handgun training, more importantly we provide the opportunity to maintain those skills through regular practice at fun-filled events.

Our Fast-Track Training Program lets beginners start with dry-fire training, then progress at their own pace to shooting at the range with defensive handguns.

We are a member-led and member-instructed non-profit community organization

We believe in the beneficial values of community service and personal growth through helping others.

Firearms training for beginners

  • Our New Shooter 101 Fast-Track Training Program is designed for beginners with no previous firearms knowledge.  You are welcome even if you have never fired a gun.
  • Our Core Concept Videos help you learn the basics of handgun safety and operation.  First watch our videos, then come to our Beginners Workshops to practice what you saw.

Shooter Certifications

ADTA offers four levels of handgun Shooter Certifications New shooters advance their shooting skills by getting signed off on specific skills, much like earning scouting merit badges.

The first level is your SAFE SHOOTER CERTIFICATION.  This qualifies you to attend our live-fire events in open shooting bays.

From there you can work your way up.  Visit our Certifications page to learn more.

Scenario based training events

Many of our training scenarios focus on basic shooting skills you need for HOME DEFENSE—getting off the X, hitting your target quickly and  accurately, and shooting from cover, to name a few.

Other training scenarios familiarize you with ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATIONS in public places, or get you ready for SUDDEN CONFRONTATIONS where you must react quickly to a threat.

What is a FUN SHOOT?

How often do you get together and go shooting with friends?  Our Fun Shoots give you a good reason to include more live-fire practice in your busy schedule.  Membership is not required to attend.  This is a great way to find out more about ADTA.

To shoot or not to shoot?

We believe that using a firearm for self-defense should be your last resort, after all other methods have failed.

Besides helping you learn how to shoot, ADTA also wants you to know how to AVOID shooting.  Our Layers of Safety training helps you learn non-lethal self-defense skills that help protect you physically as well as legally.

ADTA Defensive Training

Live-fire training:
Shooting on the move

Real-life defensive situations present themselves under pressure and without warning.  This live-fire practice session led by instructor Wu Chin gets you accustomed to reacting swiftly and accurately.  This type of training is one of the unique benefits of ADTA membership!

Live-fire training:
Shooting in low light

Many real-life defensive situations occur in low light.  But how often do you get to practice that?  In ADTA's low-light practice scenario you learn how to hold a flashlight while shooting accurately.  Led by instructor Chad Hiatt, this is one of our most popular events!

Live-fire training:
Tueller Drill with moving target

Sergeant Dennis Tueller of the Salt Lake City PD established that an attacker with a knife 21 feet away can reach you in 1.5 seconds.  Additional measurements with average people show that 1.5 – 2 seconds is typical.  This exercise with a moving target gives our trainees hands-on experience with this life-threatening situation.

Beginner's training:
New Shooter 101

Do you want to learn to shoot?  Find out what ADTA has to offer by attending our FREE defensive training workshops.  They all include an introduction to our New Shooter 101 handgun training program.  By attending you can find out how to participate in our live-fire practice events.

Layers of Safety training:
Pepper spray

Pepper spray is one of ADTA's Layers of Safety.  Our pepper spray workshop gives trainees exposure to the basic types of pepper spray, using inert practice canisters.  Pepper spray can be an effective defensive option when using deadly force is not warranted by the situation.
